Bad Luck and Trouble Jack Reacher No 11 Lee Child 9780385340557 Books Reviews
What's to say about a Jack Reacher book? They are pretty much all the same, a quick read but absorbing. Jack works his way through various obstacles, whups up on the bad guys, and thumbs a ride away, usually leaving a wistful woman. Reacher is a sort of modernized Lone Ranger. He lives nowhere, appears from nowhere, tends to business and then is gone. I would rate this one near the top, though, because the situation is more imaginative than usual. I can't wait to read the next one!
I have read numerous “Jack Reacher” novels since I first saw the movie with Tom Cruise. As Jack Reacher fans know, Tom Cruise is a good actor but does not match the way Jack is described in Lee Child’s novels. Nevertheless, I have become a fan of the series and just finished reading “Bad Luck and Trouble.” I really enjoyed this book more than some of the other Jack Reacher stories. I guess the reason this novel appealed to me is because it involves Jack Reacher and his former Army team of investigators.
The beginning chapter sets the stage for the entire book, when a Calvin Franz, a former member of Jack Reacher’s Army criminal investigators, is found in the desert after he had been dropped out of a helicopter. When Jack notices more than $1000, 00 had been deposited in his diminishing back account by some unknown person; the story begins to move along at a quick pace. Jack Reacher and some of his old Army criminal investigation team work together to solve a mystery of why one of their own people had been murdered. A good read.
I never give away too much when reviewing novels because it spoils it for those who want to read the book. If you like Jack Reacher novels you should check out “Bad Luck & Trouble.”
Rating 4 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author The Samurai Soul An old warrior’s poetic tribute).
I expected to burn out on this series when I was reading them one after the other. I slowed down after reading "One Shot," savoring each one rather than tearing through them. I don't like every storyline equally, but Jack Reacher brings it all home for me. I feel satisfied after each book, with all my questions answered.
This series is a guilty pleasure for me, as it's not my usual fare. I tend to gravitate toward fantasy and science fiction, and now that I think about it, Jack Reacher reminds me of my passion for David Weber's iconic character Honor Harrington. Not as law-abiding (now that he's out of the military), but as strong a passion for justice, and I feel just as passionate about both of them overcoming the odds to prevail.
Both characters are implacable enemies and staunch allies, humble and understanding of human frailty, straightforward and focused, but neither of them can abide corruption, or greed that leaves human casualties, and both are uniquely suited to make a difference. Both have superior size and strength on their side, both are clever and perceptive, and both are excellent leaders that inspire loyalty and bring out the best in those around them that have it to give.
I'd highly recommend this series to any Honor Harrington fan, and to anyone who likes thrilling novels of justice American style. (Don't let the fact that an Englishman writes the series put you off!) )
I am a massive Jack Reacher fan and I like the books that Dick Hill has read for the series. I have heard all that he has read for the series from online as well as read every Reacher book. This disc set did not at all make me happy. If you've read the book at all you'll be thinking... What the hell... is this edited??? There are important parts of the book actually left out. It's almost like it simply wasn't convenient for them to read the whole book so they picked the story apart for the way they would want to read it like you'd see for a movie and that's what they did. I ordered this one and previously bought the Night School one and will continue to buy the audio books until I own all of them as I do the books. It makes for a relaxing drive to work or whatever to hear the next part of the story every time you get in the car. With a 6 disc changer it works perfect from beginning to end. I still recommend this disc set, but I am not happy with the very, very lazy I'll read what I feel like reading version that is recorded here. Still a good book and although not Dick Hill's best work he is still very good.
Reacher gets called to LA to investigate the mysterious disappearance of 4 of his former Army special MP unit members. Including a Reacher, the 4 remaining members of that unit work together to figure out what happened, who did it and how they will suffer as a result. In the end, the bad guys, who are selling out our country to enrich themselves, get a taste of their own medicine and are thrown out of a helicopter to their deaths by Jack Reacher to avenge the murders of his friends. Lesson...don’t mess with Jack Reacher!
Longer than what I'm used to, and slower pace; some areas are page-turners, others not so much. I like the way the bad guys get it in the end; kinda like the bad guys at the end of a Walker Texas Ranger episode... they do all this wrong/bad stuff for the first 3/4 of the episode and then Chuck Norris catches up to them and beats the snot and earwax out of them. If you could just read the last 1/4 of each Reacher book, it would satisfy just the same; if you're into snot and earwax beatdowns that is; which I am.
