Hometown Hero A Lake Sullivan Romance Cate Cameron 9780425282069 Books Reviews
I remember when I saw the first book in this series, Just a Summer Fling, I wanted to read it but life and blogging got in the way. I added it to my list to-buy and moved on. So when I was at the book store the other day I decided not to walk by her Hometown Hero.
I have mixed feelings about Hometown Hero. I want to say I loved it but I can't. I just think it wasn't for me. Right from the beginning I knew it was a miss and not a hit. I'm sure it's a perfectly good book, just not for me.
I found that I really didn't care for the characters. I just found them one dimensional. I know they should have some depth to them I just couldn't find it. That's how I kinda knew this book isn't for me. I don't know what set me off, but something did.
Maybe it's because the author also does YA books and that's kinda how the characters felt even though this isn't suppose to be a YA book. Either way I'm glad I tried it. You can't love everything. If I did I don't even want to think about my book bill.
Now, just because it wasn't my cup of tea doesn't mean you might not like it, but I know I won't be trying anymore books by this author.
Cate Cameron has done it again and written a modern romance for today’s woman. This is a story about one woman reconciling with the past, realizing who she is, and knowing she can have it all on her terms. Zara Hale has returned to Lake Sullivan, Vermont to take care of her brother Zane and fulfill an obligation to the new community center. She’s put her training on hold as a MMA fighter and the reigning champion, to see he brother Zane settle in as he is getting out of jail after 10 years behind bars. She’s a bit uncomfortable having to deal with him now, and even more so that Cal Montgomery will be there as well and very tempting to the eye.
Zara has fended for herself for a very long time and has made something of herself as a mixed martial arts fighter. She likes the respect it has given her after growing up in Lake Sullivan as the daughter of the town drunk. Now that she is back in her hometown she realizes she’s had this skewed perception and it isn’t as she thought it would be. She has to reconcile things in her mind and make adjustments in her attitude and feelings. She doesn’t think she can relate to the women there but they make her feel welcomed and include her in their Stitch & Bitch gatherings. The name alone is a hoot! Zara also was taken back when her class at the community center is completely full and they want an idea of what she does for a living. I like how she relates to them and sees the fun in her sport once again. What catches Zara totally by surprise is the attraction she feels for Cal Montgomery. She takes a casual approach to her feelings and figures it is just temporary as she is killing time in Lake Sullivan. Things are going well and definitely heating up between her and Cal and things couldn’t be better. But when things don’t go her way, and things get between them get sticky; she cuts bait never giving Cal a chance to explain him.
Cal is just one of those characters that wants to do right and tries hard to please everyone. He was a childhood friend to both Zane and Zara and took his friendship seriously. Cal helped Zane in his own way when was arrested and went to jail all those years ago. He visited and helped create a position at the community center that was brought together by Cal and his family. Cal was attracted to Zara and knew he had to tread carefully with her or else he would spook her. His father and brother weren’t very happy with his budding relationship but he figured things out for himself when he felt pushed into a corner. He slowly got closer to Zara and felt he was making headway until her new fight was scheduled and things slowly start to fall apart. Cal was making most of the concessions in their relationship but he had to let her figure things on her own now that his feelings were revealed. I’m so glad that he listened to Zane and waited it out.
I really liked this story and how both main characters developed over the span of the story. Zara might have been a prickly person and have a big chip on her shoulder in the beginning but then it turns out she’s just hasn’t trusted enough people to let them in to her small circle of friends. Once she begins to trust that they aren’t going to hurt her, she finds that there are people who are genuine and caring. The helped her figure things out and how to make the next move. I’ve said it before that she writes with substance and smart and she definitely shows with Zara, Cal and even Zane. I’m definitely impressed and would highly recommend this book and series to fans of contemporary romance.
